Tope and Kunle met through mutual friends and quickly became friends on Facebook. Though Kunle sent Tope messages every now and again over the course of several years, Tope was busy getting her MBA, and didn’t typically respond. One of Kunle’s messages ended up with them on the phone, however, and soon they were talking for hours each day, shortening the distance between Tope in DC and Kunle in Houston, Texas. A month after they started talking, Kunle came to visit, taking Tope out on a first date to Rock Bottom Brewery.

Ten months later, Kunle, a subsea engineer, had told Tope that he was on an offshore assignment. In reality, he was in DC, plotting a surprise party for Tope with the help of her sister. When Tope walked into her brother’s house in Maryland, her family and close friends jumped out and yelled “Surprise!” Tope was completely bewildered until she saw Kunle approaching her out of the crowd. “As she saw me walking towards her from the back of the room with a ring box in my hand, she tried to run away in shock,” says Kunle. He then got down on bended knee and asked her to be his wife.

For their November wedding, the pair planned for a glam wedding at the National Museum of Women in the Arts. After their church ceremony, the two posed for portraits, including some shots at the National Gallery of Art’s Multiverse light sculpture. Their reception was filled with stunning florals, including ivory and pink roses, hydrangeas, and orchids.

Their sweetheart table was the knockout element of the night: a white settee surrounded by an arch of ivory florals and hanging crystals. The newlyweds changed into reception looks for the second half of the wedding, including a festive silver tuxedo jacket for Kunle. When the party finally came to a close, Kunle and Tope departed with plans to honeymoon in Hawaii.

This Georgetown Wedding is a Romantic Wonderland of Candles and White Roses

It never ceases to amaze us how many different ways you can do a hotel wedding in Washington. When it came to Nchang Azefor and Daniel Innocent’s The Westin Georgetown celebration, they turned it into a candlelit ivory and purple dream. Take a peek at their day below in the photos by Natarsha Wright Photography.

Though Daniel had originally attended to go to a lounge a near the one that Nchang was hanging out at with friends, when he found the club closed, he changed his plans. Nchang was retrieving her phone from the bartended who had been charging it for her as Daniel walked up. “Daniel had a great smile and sense of humor yet he seemed like a serious and sincere person,” says Nchang of her first impression. They met up for a fist date in Alexandria, where they visited the shops at the Torpedo Factory, a little over a week later.

They’d only been dating a few months when Daniel took Nchang out for dinner in Georgetown to make her feel better about having to work instead of join her family on a trip to New York. But what started as a normal date night didn’t end that way. “On the walk back to our cars, Daniel decided to propose to me,” says Nchang. “It was really out of the blue; I was not expecting that at all and was kind of taken aback.” After insisting that he get to know her family first, the pair had a dinner with Nchang’s parents a month later, after which Daniel proposed a second time. This time, Nchang said yes.

A year later, the two celebrated their wedding with a ceremony on Howard University’s campus followed by a ballroom reception in Georgetown. Their ivory, gold, and purple color scheme brought a glam vibe to the room, which was filled with candles and white roses, while a rum bar added a punch of fun to the event.

Cutest Ring Bearer Idea Ever: Turn Him Into “Ring Security” Like This Little Guy

It’s always awesome when couples can manage to have a stylish, classy event that also looks like tons of fun. That’s what Nydia Pouyes and Terrance Mebane pulled off in their glam museum wedding, captured in the photos below by Wale Ariztos.

A mutual friend had introduced them over email, but since Nydia was in DC and Terrance in Ohio, nothing came of their interaction for months. Fate also wasn’t on their side when Terrance actually did travel to DC, because as it turned out, Nydia was out of town for the weekend. When she arrived back in DC just hours before Terrance had to board a flight home to Ohio, he reached out and asked if she’d take him to the airport. She agreed, and by the end of the drive, Nydia remembers she felt “like I’ve known him for years.”

It didn’t take long for Nydia and Terrance to know they wanted to get married, so after deciding that they’d want to wed in 2015, Nydia was left looking forward to a proposal. When they planned a trip to Greece the summer of 2014, it occurred to her that this would be a fabulous time for Terrance to propose, though she doubted that he’d had time to put together the money for a ring by then. As it turns out, the idea had occurred to Terrance as well, and he popped the question at the Port of Mykonos.

For their July wedding, the two planned for a glam celebration at the National Museum of Women in the Arts. A wedding program that mimicked Vogue magazine welcomed guests into the wedding, and bourbon lemonade cocktails got the party started at the reception, where ivory florals and silver accents filled the room.

What’s Cooler: This Wedding’s Candle Decor or the Epic Raw Bar?

One of the things we love best about hotel ballrooms is all the many different ways they can transform. For Emily Sanders and Robert Elam’s May nuptials, the Four Seasons turned into a romantic, candle-lit soiree. Take a look at their lovely day in the photos below by Procopio Photography

After meeting in a very classically DC way—through parties around the time of the 2004 presidential election inauguration—Emily and Robert immediately hit it off. However, they lost touch for several years while Robert was living in San Francisco and Emily remained in DC. They came back into contact in May 2013, and picked up right where they’d started, keeping in touch long distance before Emily flew out to visit Robert at the end of the summer. After a whirlwind weekend, during which Robert impressed Emily not only by driving her over the Golden Gate Bridge in a convertible but also by letting her meet some of the nearest and dearest people in his life, they were hooked. “I knew he was a keeper,” says Emily.

Seven months later, the two planned a getaway to Salzburg, Austria, where Robert proposed in a stunning garden where parts of the “Sound of Music” had been filmed. Afterwards, they celebrated with dinner at a romantic Mozart concert at The Baroque Hall at St. Peter.

It took them just over eight months to pull together the wedding of their dreams at the Four Seasons. Their ceremony took place in front of a wall of candles, while the reception space was outfitted with floating candles and abundance of white calla lilies that set the romantic tone for the evening.

Before the night was over, Emily surprised her groom with a bourbon bar to follow the Champagne and raw bar that had been available to guests as the entered the wedding. The celebration finally came to a close with the party joining the band on stage to dance, after which the newlyweds bid adieu to their loved ones, with plans to honeymoon in Hong Kong, Angkor Wat, Cambodia, and Thailand.

There’s a lovely modern flair to Emily Jones and Brennan Decker’s “art nouveaux” themed wedding. We love their glam gold reception, but our favorite part might just be their in-the-round ceremony seating. Take a look for yourself in the photos below by Kurstin Roe Photography.

After mutual friends introduced them, the real bonding between Brennan and Emily happened over trivia nights at a local bar, where they’d meet up each week and inevitably end up talking long after the game had ended. Both were soon smitten. “Brennan is an amazing conversationalist: he’s a human encyclopedia and he also has a fantastic sense of humor,” says Emily, while Brennan says he was stunned that “this beautiful, smart, fun girl liked my jokes so much.”

After dating for two years, some of which was long distance as Brennan worked towards a PhD at University of Cambridge, Emily made a trip to England to surprise Brennan for Valentine’s Day. Little did she know that he had been planning a surprise of his own. While she was in town, Brennan asked her to be his wife with Emily’s grandmother’s engagement ring.

The pair followed their in-the-round ceremony at the National Museum of Women in the Arts with a quick photo session outside the White House, which they got to and from via Uber. Meanwhile, guests got started on a cheese and beer cocktail hour, which was a nod to Brennan’s Wisconsin roots.

When they missed the highway exit for the event Emily thought they were going to, she was a bit curious about where the night was headed. He took her to a dinner overlooking the mountains at the Primland Resort instead of his work function, and her suspicions were confirmed when Kyle popped the question in front of the romantic scenery.

Masculine and sophisticated, event planner Andrew Roby of Andrew Roby Events’ styled shoot offers a glimpse at Harlem Renaissance-inspired wedding decor, set up right here at The Ritz-Carlton Pentagon City. Take a look at the old-world glamour in the photos below by Jerris Madison Imagery.

As soon as Roby stepped into The Ritz-Carlton Pentagon City’s Diplomat Room, he knew he wanted to put together a Harlem Renaissance-themed styled shoot. His love of the era in general and the design of the room motivated him to start planning. He brought in photographer Jerris Madison Imagery to shoot his modern interpretation of the Harlem Renaissance, complete with dapper tuxes, vintage decor pieces, and a glittery, glamorous tablescape.

The shoot features a pair of grooms getting ready for their wedding with their groomsmen, followed by a reception and toast. “Once I decided on actually putting the shoot into motion, I wanted to focus on men to give their wedding experience more visibility,” says Roby.

To pull of the Harlem Renaissance inspiration, Roby sourced some special props. “We pulled various vintage pieces into the shoot such as a brass fan, a phonograph, an old Kodak camera, and even the Cotton Club style font on the menu and place cards,” he says. “With a blend of whiskey, cigars, and style, I believe our models pulled off this modern version of Harlem Renaissance.”

The George Peabody Library is a pretty epic wedding venue, and the fact that it’s just a short drive up to Baltimore is a huge plus for us all. Edwina Bawuah and Joseph (Joe) Kollo sure played up the space with their stunning portraits taken at their blush pink wedding in July. Though they’d met in physics class while both were studying at Temple University, Edwina was in a relationship, so Joe was forced to fall for her from afar. Three years later, however, when Joe hosted an alumni event that Edwina attended, both were single. “We exchanged cordial conversation but failed to exchange contact information—that’s where Facebook stepped in!” says Edwina. “Joe sent me a message on Facebook…to convince me that Facebook was too impersonal of a place to communicate and that he could ‘better keep in touch’ if he had my phone number. He didn’t have to convince me much.”

After working her way through grad school at Johns Hopkins, Edwina wanted to celebrate her graduation with a trip. Joe was game, but told her that she wasn’t allowed to know where they were going. He kept their itinerary a surprise until they boarded a flight headed to London. From there they traveled to Amsterdam, then Paris, where Joe brought Edwina to Monet’s garden in Giverny to propose.

After a four-year engagement, Joe and Edwina celebrated with loved ones at The George Peabody Library. “My favorite detail was the venue, which Joe actually discovered,” says Edwina. “Walking in to get a sneak peek before our guests came in and seeing the flowers on the tables, the gold plates in their setting, and then looking up to see the stacks—it was beautiful.”

It wasn’t until attending the same convention for Nigerian young professionals that Chi-Chi and Ifeanyi officially met. After being introduced by mutual friends who had met at the first gathering, Chi-Chi and Ifeanyi quickly hit it off, ditching the conference to sit by the pool to chat all night long.

A year and a half later, Ifeanyi, knowing Chi-Chi is a fan of waterfalls, invited her to go to the National Botanical Garden. While Chi-Chi was distracted by the garden’s petite waterfall, Ifeanyi asked someone to take their picture. As the camera snapped away, Ifeanyi reached into his pocket to pull out a ring. He got down on one knee, but Chi-Chi was so stunned that it took an onlooker shouting, “Say yes!” to get a response out of her.

For their wedding, the pair returned to the site of the first convention they’d attended together. Following their church ceremony, they celebrated with a glam gold reception at Maryland’s Martin’s Crosswinds. A dramatic Mr. & Mrs. sweetheart table made for the perfect centerpiece at the reception.

Kelly and Ramiro’s whirlwind romance all began when Kelly, a dermatologist, stopped by Ramiro’s office where he worked as a real estate agent. Both were immediately smitten—Kelly thought Ramiro was a “nice, very respectful, polite” gentleman, while Ramiro was floored by Kelly’s combination of beauty and brains. A dinner date and trip to the movies soon followed.

After meeting at a church conference via mutual friends, Roger and Victoria really got to know one another when they connected over Facebook. Their first date was a group outing to bowling and dinner to celebrate a friend’s birthday, and as Victoria got to know Roger, she realized that “he is truly a fine gentleman.”

Little did she know that Roger had coordinated with family and friends from out-of -town to show up for the occasion. As the celebration was winding down, Roger stood up in front of their loved ones and asked her to marry him.
