Anna first noticed Alex when he sped past her in a rival track match between her school, Pomona College, and his, Occidental College. “When did Occidental get fast?” Anna asked her teammate. Later, at a track party, it was Alex’s turn to be intimidated by the beautiful brunette. “I was struck by how smart and quick she was and soon realized that I was batting way above my IQ range,” he says. He tried to impress her with a night of dinner and live music on their first date, but when they arrived at the restaurant, they learned that there would be no performers that night, just a long wait for their table. But despite the poor setting, they managed to enjoy one another’s company enough to merit another date.

They’d dated seven years–through the rest of college and their professional schooling–when Alex took Anna to dinner at a restaurant near the inn where they were staying in Carmel, CA. After their meal, Alex brought Anna back to their room where he proposed to her fireside with chocolate, champagne, and a stunning diamond ring.

For their wedding, they returned to Arlington, near the bride’s hometown in McLean. They celebrated at Army Navy Country Club with an elegant outdoor ceremony which included Israel Kamakawiwo’ole songs that were a tribute to Anna’s Hawaiian heritage. This may very well be the most Christmas-y Christmas wedding we’ve ever seen, and we love every bit of it. Simply Breathe Events helped Meaghan Cassidy and Ryan Dofflemeyer bring their dream holiday wedding to life, from the Christmas light socks worn by the groomsmen to the bright red berries in the bride’s bouquet. All of the festive celebration was captured by Dyanna Joy Photography.

Meaghan and Ryan met the way many love stories begin these days–on Match.com. She was the second date he’d lined up, and after they met for a first date at Circa, he decided to cancel his third. They bonded over the New York Giants during their long conversation, and by the end of the date Ryan was convinced they had a connection.

They’d dated for a little over a year when they took a trip to the Jersey shore over the 4th of July holiday weekend. A romantic proposal on the beach was followed by 17 months of planning to prepare for their perfect Christmas wedding.

Knowing they wanted to have a Christmas theme for their December 13, 2014 wedding, Meaghan and Ryan chose to marry at the Gaylord National Resort, which was decorated to the nines for the holiday season. Gold bridesmaid dresses and red and green florals added to the festive decor, as did the tree ornament place cards.

Candy Cane Kiss cocktails and lantern centerpieces added some wintry elements to the reception, and at then end of the night, all of the guests were sent home with their own bit of greenery in a package that read, “Meet me under the mistletoe.”

This Modern Urban Wedding Brought the Jungle to Long View Gallery

The wedding of Lisa Caligiuri and Dean Niedosik was full of contrasts: modern, yet rustic; urban, yet full of lush greens; elegant, yet Philly cheesesteaks were served. Altogether, this modern celebration is exactly what it should be: all the different parts and personalities of the couple reflected in a party, and captured by Kurstin Roe Photography.

True love doesn’t always begin at first sight, which was good news for Lisa and Dean, who didn’t even like one another when they first met at a dinner party with mutual friends. Lisa thought Dean needed a wardrobe makeover, while Dean thought Lisa was just too opinionated. The tides turned, however, when Dean asked Lisa on a date in his hometown, Philadelphia. When Lisa attended Dean’s childhood friend’s birthday party, she realized that she and Dean had more in common than she thought. “I completely fell in love because I realized that he had the same values and [grew] up the same way I did,” says Lisa. “It was a magical weekend.”

Two months later, the pair was visiting Toronto, where they dined on the waterfront. After dinner, they went for a stroll. “We walked the streets and talked about getting married,” says Lisa. “We both decided together this is absolutely what we wanted.”

For their modern ceremony at Long View Gallery, they wed in front of a boxwood backdrop. They kept to the theme of rich, deep greens at the reception with tall, rain forest-like arrangements. Clusters of candles on tall stands provided an illusion of floating candles above the rustic wood banquet tables and metallic chairs.

Near the end of the reception, the couple served Philly cheesesteaks on authentic Amoroso’s bread as a late night snack follow-up to the wedding cake they’d suspended from the ceiling. After swaying to Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud,” the bride and groom departed to honeymoon in Hawaii.

Given Katie Kirby’s role as an event designer at local firm Revolution Events, it should come as no surprise that her wedding to Julie Lubin would be decked out in creative and glam decor elements. We love that this wedding is filled with both drama and stylish flair, along with some beautiful personal touches and family involvement. Katie and Julie’s wedding was captured on camera by photographers Michelle Kinney and Weslie Woodley.

Katie had never made a first move on Match.com before, but Julie’s description of her desired partner so closely matched Katie’s personality that she took a chance. Drinks at Bethesda’s Redwood Restaurant and Bar turned into a whirlwind courtship; ten months later, Julie filled a hotel room with fuchsia orchids. Overwhelmed by what was about to happen, Katie hid in a corner. Julie coaxed her out by saying, “Honey, if I’m asking you to marry me, you have to turn around and look at me.”

The youngest in both their families, the couple’s wedding party consisted of 19 children, all of whom danced down the aisle in a bubble parade to “XO” by Beyoncé. It was almost impossible to sneak any surprises past the detail-oriented Katie, an event designer with Revolution Events, but gemologist Julie privately arranged for two of Katie’s friends to honor Katie’s late vocal teacher with a song as part of the ceremony.

Katie, in turn, had a surprise of her own: During the  recessional, designated guests popped up from their seats to sing Marvin Gaye’s “You’re All I Need to Get By” while waiters passed out glasses of Champagne. Midway down the aisle, the newlyweds raised their flutes and shared a fun-filled first toast with friends and family.

Their indoor reception was filled with stunning floral arrangements—some placed in vases, others suspended overhead—while a cluster of chandeliers added a modern and sophisticated element to the dance floor.  Before the end of the night, there was one more big surprise that would occur: a group of Katie and Julie’s guy friends performed a choreographed dance to “Uptown Funk”—the result of months of practicing to impress the happy couple.

Entrepreneur Andy seemed on the quiet side when he met event planner Yodit at a Christmas Eve party, but surprising details in common (like the same birthday!) kept the pair chatting. Their first official date was a Cedric the Entertainer movie followed by a game of pool at Lucky Strike. “Andy was the quintessential gentleman the whole time,” Yodit remembers. Few words were needed for the proposal six years later: Andy slipped the ring on Yodit’s finger while she slept.

Red and Gold Wedding Inspo That Proves a Barn Can Be Glamorous, Too

Just because your wedding venue happens to be a barn, that doesn’t mean you have to go full-blown rustic with your theme. Glitz and glamor are still an option, as you will see in this red and gold styled shoot by Clarity & Class and Sharmila Photography.

The theme behind the styled shoot was “enchanted love story,” which served to marry high and low elements: a barn setting with gold accents.  “For our team’s gold and reds inspired enchanted love story, I immediately began with the venue,” says planner Sonia Hernandez of Clarity & Class. “I knew that a barn would be my ultimate goal, and I was so lucky to have come across Robin Hill Farms.”

When it came to choosing a model, Hernandez knew she wanted to embrace the diversity of the region. “One of the greatest things about living in the National Capital Region is our exposure to different cultures,” says Hernandez. “Our model, Ledet, had the natural beauty and has amazing curly hair.”

The mix of organic and elegant came to life in the tablescape with a mix of wicker and wood combined with an antique gold vase.  The theme was rounded out with a red velvet naked cake, which was given a touch of glam with a gold script topper.

This Modern Pink Wedding Will Make You Want To Marry on the Baltimore Harbor

Courtney Katunick and Philip (Phil) Meckel’s wedding has the best of both worlds: a breezy, beautiful waterfront ceremony and a city-chic downtown reception. This Inner Harbor celebration was captured on camera by Audra Wrisley Photography.

When Courtney stopped in at Baltimore’s No Idea Tavern to pick up her to-go order, she really didn’t have any idea how significant that night would be. The owner, one of Courtney’s good friend, wanted to introduce her to Phil, who was seated at the bar. Their introductory chat turned into hours of conversation until they closed the place down that night. “She had a girl-next-door look matched with a type-A personality,” says Phil. “It complemented my laid-back nature rather well.”

A year and a half later, Courtney and Phil were vacationing in Nevada when Phil planned to take Courtney to picnic by Red Rock Canyon at sunset. Just as they’d settled in, however, two cars of tourists pulled up, ruining the romantic mood. Though Courtney had no idea why Phil was frustrated by this situation, she agreed to drive with him to a new viewing spot. When they arrived and got re-situated to watch the sunset, Phil said, “You could do this forever, right?” Courtney responded with, “Of course,” just before Phil pulled out a stunning sapphire ring and asked her to spend forever with him.

The pair of Maryland natives planned their wedding for the Baltimore waterfront, followed by a glam reception at the American Visionary Art Museum. Table linens in different shades of blush and ivory created an ombre effect throughout the reception, as did the pink and white floral arrangements.

Guests enjoyed a cigar and scotch bar at the reception, then munched on chocolate and carrot cake slices before departing with hand-painted wine glass favors, made by the bride and family members. When it was time for the festivities to come to a close, Courtney and Phil exited with plans for a three-week honeymoon in Italy, Greece, Spain, and Morocco.

We’re always impressed when a couple manages to take a ballroom and make it feel intimate, no matter how many guests are included in the day. Romantic low lighting helps, and Elizabeth (Betsy) Pike and Evan Mannis had an abundance of it at their elegant chandelier-filled St. Regis wedding, captured below by Rhinehart Photography.

A Maryland native, Betsy had just finished law school when she moved back to the DC area. Her friend, who had lived in DC since college, was at an event with Betsy and took the opportunity to introduce her to Evan. His great sense of humor and her quick wit helped them hit it off, leading to a first date at Lincoln restaurant.

Three and a half years later, Evan and Betsy had plans to go to dinner with Evan’s father to celebrate Evan’s birthday. Though Betsy realized after the fact that she probably should have been suspicious when Evan said they were meeting at the Dupont home of some unheard-of friend of his father’s, she didn’t bat an eye when Evan told her they’d walk to Dupont from their place. They ended up at the Spanish Steps, and just as Betsy was beginning to worry they were lost, Evan got down on one knee to propose while a hidden photographer captured the moment.

Almost one year to the day of their engagement, Betsy and Evan celebrated their wedding with an elegant ceremony and reception at The St. Regis Washington, DC. Floating candles and chandeliers gave the ceremony space an elegant, romantic feel, while monochromatic floral arrangements dripping with crystals made for chic reception decor.

During the reception, guests donned blue sunglasses and filled the dance floor. Betsy’s favorite surprise of the night was, “seeing my 92-year-old grandmother rocking out on the dance floor with her party shades on until the end of the night. It was so special to have her there and we will cherish that memory forever.” After cutting into their chocolate wedding cake and giving out koozies with the DC flag and their wedding hashtag (#evanstobetsy), the newlyweds departed with plans to honeymoon in Turks and Caicos.

The Cake at This Glam DC Wedding is the Coolest Homage to Love and Travel

Marriages come together in all different ways, and in the case of Cory Bullock and ‘Iolani Lightbourne, it was a mix of insane chance and a shared love of travel. Their gorgeous day celebrated both, as you’ll see in the photos below by Venessa Ramirez of Vness Photography.

Cory and ‘Iolani first met in 2005 while enrolled in the same internship program, and though they became Facebook friends by the end of the summer, they were too busy with their work to really get to know one another. Four years later, fate brought them back together again when they both ended up at the Waldorf Astoria in New York for a charity function. They recognized one another and chatted for a while, discussing her travels around the globe and his love of international relations. “I found a beautiful, intelligent, well-traveled woman who could put up with my crazy friends—I knew I hit a jackpot!” says Cory. The deal was sealed when Cory happened to board the same subway train as ‘Iolani the very next day. Cory asked her out to an upscale Chinese restaurant in Manhattan, and by the end of the night, both were hooked.

They’d dated for four years and made the move from New York to DC when Cory planned a dinner out at Marvin. Though it was only a ten minute walk from their apartment, Cory arranged for a car service to pick them up. Once in the car, Cory kept ‘Iolani distracted with questions so she wouldn’t notice that they were headed to the Capitol building rather than the restaurant. Once they arrived at the Capitol, Cory hopped out and asked the driver to take a photo of the two of them, and just as the driver started snapping photos, Cory turned to ‘Iolani and asked her to be his wife.

For their wedding at Carnegie Institution for Science, Cory and ‘Iolani embraced gold accents and a “Love is a Journey” theme, featuring country names in place of table numbers and a cake that had “love” written on it in multiple languages. After sharing their first kiss, the bride and groom were serenaded with a surprise performance of “Happy” by Pharrell Williams, performed by The Georgetown Saxatones.

Another surprise of the night was when Cory and ‘Iolani busted out a choreographed first dance with moves from Kid ‘n Play and the whip and nae nae from “Watch Me” by Silento. At the end of the night, after sipping blood orange margaritas and cutting into their red velvet cake, the happy couple departed with plans to honeymoon in South Africa.

With touches of gold glam, Angelina Perricone and Christopher (Chris) Rybak’s wedding is all modern sophistication. But we love that the elegance of their event didn’t hold them back from including a gaggle of their little cousins in the wedding party, which was the bride’s favorite element of the whole day. Take a peek through their celebration in the photos below by Elizabeth Fogarty.

Sophomore year of college, Angel and Chris were enrolled in a dinosaur science class together, and Angel thought it’d be fun to rent a show called “Dinosaurs” to watch—and it didn’t hurt that it would also allow her to spend more time with her cute and funny classmate. They went on a poor-college-kids-style first date of a late night Dunkin’ Donuts, and that summer, visited each others’ hometowns. “I think we both realized not only how crazy we were about each other, but also how well we both fit in with each others’ families,” says Angel.

Seven years of dating later, Angel and Chris were living in New York City together as Chris completed his masters. On a cold rainy night in December, Chris coaxed Angel to take the longer, scenic route through Washington Square Park on their way to dinner. Crossing through the park, they ran into a pair of students who asked Angel to take their picture, after which, Chris asked the students to return the favor. “I had no idea why we would possibly want a picture in the dark and rain, but I went along with it,” says Angel. As they prepared for the camera, Chris dropped to one knee and asked Angel to be his wife. Later, the pair would come to learn that Angel’s grandfather had proposed to her grandmother in the very same park.

For their spring wedding in Washington, Angel and Chris knew they wanted to incorporate all of their young cousins in their wedding, which meant including nine excited children in the day. The bride and groom didn’t regret their choice for a second. “Not only did they keep us laughing all weekend, it was so special to see them instantly befriending each other despite never having met before,” says Angel. “Plus, they looked absolutely adorable!”

Several elements of their modern glam gold wedding were handmade, including the paper goods—which were designed by the bride, a graphic designer—and the paint-splattered glass bottles used in the centerpieces. For a fun twist, Angel also created temporary tattoos from the design work she’d done on the invitations. “The tattoos were especially popular with our youngest guests, who proudly wore them on their faces!” she says. Finally, after a night of partying with loved ones, the newlyweds departed for a minimoon in Charleston, with plans for a Thailand honeymoon months later.

Barns can go glam, as evidenced by Cate Brandon and Michael Bonistalli’s “Gatsby meets Virginia farmhouse” celebration, planned by Roberts & Co. Events and photographed by Reneé Michele Photography

Though Cate had already cancelled her Match.com account, the couple of weeks she had left before the membership ran out gave Michael the time to reach out. He’d never gone on a date with anyone he’d met through the service before, but after an initial phone call (which lasted three hours!), the two decided to meet up in Cleveland Park for a five-hour date at a roof deck bar and the zoo.

During their three-year relationship, an annual trip to the National Zoo’s ZooLights festival became tradition. When they returned to visit the attraction once again, they paused by the rattan elephant to take their picture, like always. This time, as they got into position for a photo, Michael got down on one knee and asked Cate to be his wife.

For their June wedding, the pair completely transformed a rustic barn event space in Leesburg into a “Gatsby meets Virginia farmhouse” experience, including draping, chandeliers dripping with greenery, calligraphy by the bride’s mother, and a wall of tea lights. After the cocktail hour, a brass band led the guests through the woods to the stunning barn reception.

In place of cake, the newlywed shared pies packaged in jars, and for favors, sent guests home with bags of flavored popcorn. Following their send-off, the bride and groom departed with plans to honeymoon on the West Coast and in Hawaii.

For Kamana Sharma, the fashion blogger behind Social and Style, and Shivanth Bhaskaran, who works in medical technology, it was important that their multi-day celebration incorporated both of their cultural backgrounds and their shared love of fun. Their bright and beautiful wedding was captured in the photos below by Photographick Studios.

Kamana and Shivanth originally met online, but when they met up in DC in person, their first meeting was magical. “Suddenly I see this beautiful girl walking towards me from one end of a really long hallway,” says Shivanth of their first meeting. “I couldn’t see who clearly but her smile, presence and grace captivated me in that instant. I had to pinch myself to make sure I was not dreaming.” A ten-hour first date that started with brunch and continued through dinner kicked off their romance. Seven months later, Shivanth proposed to Kamana at a chateau in California that he’d rented out for the occasion.

When it came to planning their Hindu wedding, Kamana and Shivanth wanted to make it traditional, memorable, and fun. The celebrations began the night before the wedding at the couple’s sangeet at Silk Restaurant & Banquet Services, who set up floral photo backdrop for guests to pose in front of before the celebration. To combine Kamana’s North India and Shivanth’s South Indian heritage, Kamana’s friend, who happens to be managing director of the Indian dance school Rhythmaya, started the dancing that reflected multiple cultures.

For the wedding ceremony the following day, Kamana and her bridesmaids wore coral and mint saris, her favorite colors. The groom’s family participated in the baraat–a processional that included Shivanth riding horseback as a deejay and dhol player set the celebratory mood. Meanwhile, the bride’s side participated in the jutti chupai, stealing the groom’s shoes and hiding them. “Our jutti chupai lasted over half an hour with intense negotiations from the groom’s side on how to get the shoes back!” Following these traditions, the couple wed under a mint and gold mandap.

When it came to the reception, the happy couple wanted the focus to be having fun, limiting the number of formalities so that they could spend the time on the dance floor. Kamana’s friend from the dance school led a flashmob dance for the newlyweds, and guests had the chance to pose in a DIY picture frame photo booth made by the bride. Before the end of the night, Kamana and Shivanth cut into their five-tier wedding cake and shared an Indian dessert buffet with their guests. The following morning, the partying continued with a “Best-Day-Ever-After” brunch.

Dana was visiting a friend on a Marine Corps base in North Carolina when her friend introduced her to Kevin. Dana’s friend took her out to a bar that evening, where Dana and Kevin crossed paths again. This time, they struck up a conversation, and soon discovered they’d grown up just half an hour away from one another. They exchanged numbers at the end of the night, and even though they lost touch afterwards, a few years later, they found one another again via social media. A first date hiking the Billy Goat Trail, picnicking, and chatting for hours sealed the deal.

A little over a year after they’d started dating, Kevin took Dana on the Ferris wheel at National Harbor. When they reached the top, Kevin asked Dana to be his wife. Afterwards, they met up with family at a local restaurant to celebrate.

They brought the glam to their gold ballroom wedding at Hotel Monaco DC. Glittering sequin tablecloths, acrylic ghost chairs, and floating candles all helped contribute to the upscale party vibe. The most memorable moment of the wedding was the toasts. The maid of honor ended hers with a rap, while Dana’s father took the opportunity to honor Kevin’s late brother, also a Marine. During his father of the bride speech, he called out to all the Marines in the room and said, “Most people believe that a moment of silence is appropriate, but I believe the best way to remember someone is to make some noise. So, my Marines, please stand up. Marines, what do we say?” To which they cheered “OOORAH!”

The happy couple danced the night away, serving pies and an ice cream float stand with unusual combinations like Coke and chocolate and sweet tea with creme de menthe in place of a traditional cake. When the night came to a close, the newlyweds departed, a honeymoon in Antigue their next big adventure.

We just can’t get over how stylish Brandi Miller and Brandon Carr’s glam gold wedding is. To start, there’s Brandi’s not one but two custom gowns, and then there’s all the fun art deco accents that can be found all throughout the reception. When they first met at a birthday party for Brandi’s cousin, Brandon didn’t waste any time in snagging Brandi’s number. “I thought he was pretty clever,” says Brandi. “He tricked me into [giving] him my number for what I thought was the guest list for events he promoted.” Instead of inviting her to an upcoming event, Brandon called her two days after to ask her out. When Brandi found out he was actually six years younger than her, she took some convincing, but two months later, Brandon finally wore her down. A first date at Wow Cafe kicked off their relationship.

After dating for six years, some of which was long distance, Brandon arranged a dinner for Brandi and her parents in Annapolis, on the pretense of celebrating Brandi’s mother’s birthday. Since Brandon was working in Arizona at the time, Brandi wasn’t planning to see him until Thanksgiving, a week later. But as Brandi settled in to dine with her parents, she felt someone pat her shoulder. She turned to see Brandon standing behind her, just before he got down on one knee and asked her to be his wife.

When it came to their glam art deco wedding–inspired by the Harlem Renaissance–at The Belvedere in Baltimore, Brandi was excited for both the gold table decor and her fabulous gold custom dresses. After marrying in a gold mermaid gown, she later changed into a dramatic two-piece ensemble.

A tower of cupcakes and cake pops topped with a single-tier cake served as dessert, while guests sipped custom cocktails of Brandi’s tequila lemonade and Brandon’s Old Fashioned with honey simple syrup. After dancing to “A Couple of Forevers” by Chrisette Michele, the happy couple departed.

After Emily, owner of floral design company Love Blooms, proved hesitant when her friend tried to set her up with Jon, a software designer, the friend decided to throw a party and invite them both so they’d be forced to meet. Emily was annoyed with her friend at first, but thought that Jon seemed to be a perfect gentleman, genuine, and polite. A month after they met, their friend’s scheme came to fruition, as the two went out on a first date at La Tasca in Arlington.

Three and a half years later, Jon and Emily spent the Fourth of July with Emily’s family in Ocean City, Maryland. The pair went for a midnight walk on the beach, during which Jon popped the question, kicking off their 13-month engagement.

For their August wedding, Emily and Jon planned a jewel-toned fete to follow their outdoor ceremony at St. Francis Hall. The bride inscribed the geode escort cards and the gold-framed table numbers herself, and her floral company, Love Blooms, tied together rich plum and berry pink hues with the bouquets and table arrangements of dahlias, ranunculus, and roses.
